Three Seasons Lawn and Garden Care

As we watch the summer dwindle away it is important that we look at what needs to be done with regard to lawn and garden care in the fall. Taking care of your gardens and lawns is not just a summer chore; the work really should be spread out over spring, summer and fall. There are specific things that you need to look at during each phase of the seasons.

First and foremost when you are looking at readying your lawn and gardens for the winter months you need to be wary of the temperature. Secondly, the fall is a great time to plant your spring blubs and any other plants, trees or shrubs that you want to bloom in the spring. As the leaves begin to change in the next few weeks we will soon notice the change in the temperature. The nights will slowly become colder. It is important that you make sure that your gardens are all cleaned out once the frost sets in. If you have tomatoes or peppers that are not quite ripe, pick them and get them indoors.

Once you notice the leaves changing this is a great time for you to start your fall lawn and garden care. Your flower beds and vegetable garden should be tilled up turning over the soil readying for the cold winter. It’s a good idea to take some soil samples so that you’re aware of what you need to do to treat your soil. You should purchase some fall/winter fertilizer that will be appropriate for what your soil needs require.

Once you have all the hard work done, get some nice spring blooming plants in the ground. Tulips, mums, and other early plants and flowers do well when planted in the fall. If you are planting other shrubbery or trees make sure you’re aware of any protection they may need to get through the harsh winter.

Much of your lawn and garden care needs can be done yourself. You will likely need to consult with a lawn and garden specialist to have your soil tested. If is always a good idea to discuss your plans with a professional, you don’t want all of your hard work to go to waste.
